World Book Day

I wonder if Mary Poppins, Horrid Henry and Paddington Bear have ever met up in the world of fiction... Maybe not, but they certainly did in Whitebeam Class on World Book Day, along with a myriad of other characters, together with some non-fiction characters, too. Perhaps the zebra that escaped from the Picture Atlas wanted to be coloured by the Crayola that downed tools in The Crayons That Wanted to Quit; or Alice (from Wonderland) wanted to play with Pippi Longstocking.

Back to a bit of reality, all the children in Whitebeam made a fantastic effort at dressing up on World Book Day that it was difficult to believe we hadn't actually got the real characters in class for the day. They soon showed who they really were, though, by the amount of effort that went into their learning (I'm sure the real Horrid Henry wouldn't have been nearly so diligent!).

Everyone found some fascinating facts about their character (Joey found out that Superman's middle name is Joseph!) and were able to talk about their costumes in an entertaining and informative way.

In class we have been reading The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith and groups of children designed some incredible ways for the hedgehogs to cross the road safely. I think the Hedgehog Preservation Society would be very interested in some of the ideas. The afternoon was taken up with making our own blank books ready to be filled with exciting stories - I hope some of those stories have been started; do bring them in to show the whole class when you have finished.
