Rule 21: ‘cian’ or ‘ssion’ suffixes

Use the powerpoint to explore when the ‘cian’ or ‘ssion’ suffixes are used. Can children explain when to use each suffix?

Read for pleasure: Spend 10-15 minutes (or more if you want) reading something for pleasure. It could be a story, poem, play, information text, comic, graphic novel or online text/kindle/e-reader. You could also read to a younger or older sibling.

Guidance: work through the relevant powerpoint below with the children (Note: there is a separate powerpoint for year 5 and year 6. They can record responses to the questions in their exercise books as they go.

Year 5 R5e. Confidently uses new language from their own reading experiences in their written and spoken work

Year 6 R5e: Can explain and justify inferences, providing evidence from the text to support reasoning

Unit fraction: a fraction which has a numerator of one e.g. ¼, ½

Non-unit fraction: a fraction whose numerator is not one e.g. 3/4 , 2/3

Integer: a whole number
